Das Zertifizierungssystem für nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung PEFC basiert inhaltlich auf internationalen Beschlüssen der Nachfolgekonferenz der Umweltkonferenz von Rio (1992). Bei uns sind dies die Kriterien und Indikatoren, die auf den Ministerkonferenzen zum Schutz der Wälder in Europa (Helsinki 1993, Lissabon 1998, Wien 2003) von 37 Nationen im Pan-Europäischen Prozess verabschiedet wurden.
Vorrangiges Ziel von PEFC ist die Dokumentation und Verbesserung der nachhaltigen Waldbewirtschaftung im Hinblick auf ökonomische, ökologische sowie soziale Standards. Die Waldzertifizierung kann nur dann erfolgreich sein, wenn das Holz mit PEFC-Zertifikat auch den Endverbraucher erreicht. Dazu ist die Mithilfe jedes Betriebes als Teil der Produktkette unverzichtbar. Der Nachweis des Holzflusses, die sogenannte Chain-of-Custody, muss jedes Glied der Kette erfassen. Dazu ist auch eine Zertifizierung der holzwirtschaftlichen Betriebe in der Produktkette notwendig.
Wer kann sich nach der 'chain-of-custody' (CoC) zertifizieren lassen?
Grundsätzlich kann sich jeder Betrieb, der mit Holz arbeitet, unabhängig ob er in der Verarbeitungskette am Anfang - z. B. im Holzeinschlag oder der Rohholzverarbeitung - oder als Hersteller von Gebrauchsgegegnständen aus Holz oder Papier - am Ende steht, zertifizieren lassen. Auch dem reinen Handelsunternehmen als Bindeglied in der Verarbeitungskette steht eine Zertifizierung offen.
About PEFC?
The certification system for sustainable forest management is based on international decisions of the follow-up conference of the environmental conference of Rio (1992). These are the criteria and indicators which are adopted by 37 nations in the Pan European process at the ministerial conferences to the protection of the woods in Europe (Helsinki 1993, Lissabon 1998, Vienna 2003).
The priority of PEFC is the documentation and improvement of sustainable forest management with regard to economic, ecological as well as social standards. The certification of forests can be successful only when the PEFC certified wood also reaches the end user. The help of every company as a part of the product chain is indispensable. The proof of the flow of wood, the so-called Chain of Custody, must include every member of the chain. This also requires a certification of the timber-industrial enterprises within the product chain.
Who can be certified according to the 'Chain of Custody' (CoC)?
In principle, any company which works with wood can be certified. Regardless whether he is at the beginning of the processing chain (e. g. felling or processing of raw wood) or at the end (e. g. manufacturer of basic commodities made of wood or paper). Also a pure trading company, as a link within the processing chain, is free to get certified.
